The Country Constitutional Club

History of the Club

Our origins go back to 1886. On 22nd September of that year, the club was officially opened by the Marquis of Salisbury and was originally called the County Club, with premises in St Peter’s Street, St Albans. The first president of the club was James Walter Grimston, 2nd Earl of Verulam.

The aim of the club is to provide a non-political, non-ethnic, non-religious, social and recreational facility for gentlemen and ladies of the district. These traditions, we are glad to say, continue to the present day with modern tweeks of course. In 1925 the word “Constitutional” was added to its title and in 1932 the club was incorporated as a limited company, being known as The County Constitutional Club (St Albans) Limited.
